Crochet Coral / かぎ針編み珊瑚
ZAORICknitknitの屋号で活動・制作をはじめて、気づけば15年が経ちました。
かぎ針編みに出会ってからは、もう40年。人生、本当にあっという間ですね。
「珊瑚」をモチーフに作品を編みはじめてから、もう何年になるのでしょうか。
珊瑚の成長プロセスを再現するには、かぎ針編みが最適――これはもう、皆さまご存知のことかもしれません。
最近は、珊瑚に似たフォルムを持つ「地衣類」にも興味が湧いてきました。
地衣類は「菌類と藻類の共生体」です。
――はい、この時点でもう面白い。「え、菌類なの？藻類なの？どっちなの？」と、つい考えてしまいます。
珊瑚も地衣類も、観察していると、「これを編んだらどんな形になるのだろう」と想像がふくらみます。
どんな糸を使えばいい？ どんな色ならリアルなフォルムに近づく？
そして、リアルさの中に自分の感覚を織り交ぜて、少しデフォルメしてみたらどうだろう――。
そんなことばかりを、ついつい考えてしまうのです。
そして、作品が完成したときには、
「うん、うん、これ、良い。これは、可愛い。」と、ひとり歓喜に浸るのです。
この“自分だけの歓喜”を、もっと多くの方に見てもらいたい。
ただの「かぎ針編み」ではなく、ZAORICknitknitがつくる“面白いかぎ針編みアートの世界観”を。
今回の珊瑚作品「coral crochet」は、私の手元から旅立つ前にポートフォリオ撮影をしていただきました。

It’s hard to believe it’s already been 15 years since I began creating under the name ZAORICknitknit.
And it’s been nearly 40 years since I first discovered crochet.
Time really does fly, doesn’t it?
I wonder how many years it’s been since I started crocheting pieces inspired by coral.
Crochet is truly the perfect medium to recreate coral’s growth process—
perhaps many of you already know this.
Lately, I’ve also found myself intrigued by lichens, which have forms similar to coral.
Lichens are symbiotic organisms made up of fungi and algae.
—Yes, even that alone is fascinating.
You can’t help but think, “Wait, is it a fungus? Or an alga? Which is it?”
When I observe coral and lichen closely,
my imagination takes off:
What would it look like if I tried to crochet this shape?
What kind of yarn would be best?
What colors would capture the realism of the form?
And then I start wondering—what if I mixed in a bit of my own artistic sensibility and added a slight touch of stylization?
These are the thoughts that constantly swirl around in my mind.
And when a piece is finally complete,
I find myself quietly overjoyed, thinking,
“Yes, yes—this is good. This is adorable.”
That personal joy—I want to share it with more people.
Not just “crochet,”
but the unique and imaginative world of crochet art that ZAORICknitknit creates.
